Alabama Shakes’ sophomore album, Sound & Color (ATO Records/MapleMusic Recordings), won the GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Music Album last night. The album’s first single, “Don’t Wanna Fight,” took honors in the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song categories, bringing their awards tally to three. In addition, Canadian Shawn Everett took home Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, for his work on Sound & Color.
Their performance of “Don’t Wanna Fight” at last night’s awards ceremony left Rolling Stone commenting “[Front woman] Brittany Howard…led the Shakes through the pleading, heart-wrenching soul throwback, swallowing the theater whole with her vocals, which swung easily between ragged and rapturous.”
Today, the band announced the second leg of its 2016 North American headline tour. The summer run will kick off on July 15 at Mud Island Amphitheater in Memphis and include two shows in Chicago – July 19 at the Civic Opera House and July 20 at Aragon Ballroom. The band’s August 9 show at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre has already sold out, so a show has been added on August 10. A ticket pre-sale for the summer shows begins on Wednesday, February 17, at 10:00 AM local time at www.alabamashakes.com/tour. Tickets go on sale to the public beginning Friday, February 19.
Alabama Shakes’ spring tour launches on April 21 at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheatre. Due to the level of demand for tickets, the venue for the April 26 show in Asheville, NC has been changed from Thomas Wolfe Auditorium to ExploreAsheville.com Arena. The band will stop in Burnaby, BC on May 28th for a show at Festival Lawn at Deer Lake Park. The band will perform at many 2016 festivals, including Hangout, Sasquatch, Forecastle, British Summer Time Hyde Park and Lollapalooza in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Sound & Color, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, appeared on many critics’ best-of-2015 lists, including The New York Times, NPR Music, Associated Press and Rolling Stone, which called it “one of the year’s most daring interstellar groove journeys.”
“Don’t Wanna Fight” came in at No. 1 on NPR’s list of the best songs of 2015. “Sound & Color,” the album’s title track, is currently charting in the Top 10 at Non-Comm radio, within the Top 20 at Triple A and climbing at Urban AC. The song was heard in the new iPad Pro commercial and in the trailer for director David O’Russell’s film JOY, which featured two additional songs from the album. The “Sound & Color” video, which can be seen below, was nominated for the VEVO Vision Award.
“Sound & Color is one of the most wonderfully unique rock records of the past five years,” said SPIN and American Songwriter observed, “they make magic.” “There are no more limits for Alabama Shakes-not even the sky” said PASTE. The Los Angeles Times praised the album as a “breathtaking statement that expands on the band’s rock ‘n’ soul debut in ways few could have predicted…At its center…Brittany Howard, an undeniable force equally gifted at song craft and vocal performance.”
Alabama Shakes – comprising lead singer/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and touring keyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton – has received a BRIT Awards nomination for Best International Band. Billboard named Howard as the 2015 Women in Music “Powerhouse” artist. You can read People Magazine’s feature on Howard HERE and listen to her interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s “Fresh Air” HERE.
